Chapter 01
The Genesis

Heritage of a Natural Event: Formation of the Waterfall

Unlike other waterfalls we know, Tortum Waterfall occurred as a result of an impressive geological event in a period close to human history.

In the mid-1700s (18th century), a massive landslide from Kemerlidağ blocked the flow of the Tortum Stream in the Tev Valley, changing the face of the region forever. This natural dam formed **Tortum Lake**, and the point where the excess water cascaded over the landslide mass gave birth to the magnificent **Tortum Waterfall**.

"It is one of the largest waterfalls in the world formed as a result of a landslide."
